Bracket Battle 2012: And the Winner is...

So, 2012's Bracket Battle has ended, and the bragging rights are going to Frank (God help us all). It would seem this year's wallpaper graphic with Frank's name painted on there was prophetic.

Kentucky's big win in the NCAA Tournament paid off for the cats in the Lair, including myself. I finished in second place, followed by Uncle Kerouac, who's bizarre bracket strategy had left him lingering in the bottom three for most of the tourney.

Rounding out the top half of the Bracket Battle was Special Agent Windsor and Sam the Bear. Windsor spent the first day of the tournament in first place, but never made it back into the top spot after that. He sneaked past Sam since he had at least picked Kentucky to make it into the championship game. If he'd picked Kentucky to win it all, Windsor would have actually finished out the Bracket Battle in second place.

Sam the Bear had enjoyed first place for most of the tournament. It wasn't until North Carolina was eliminated in its Elite Eight match-up against Kansas that he fell from atop the Bracket Battle. Not bad for a bear who made his picks while drunk on wine and in the throws of a cupcake-induced sugar high.

That's a wrap for this year's Bracket Battle (although, we'll see this Thursday how Frank celebrates his victory). Already looking forward to next year's Bracket Battle, assuming the Mayan prophecy doesn't get us all killed before then.

Bracket Battle 2012: The Brackets

The first day of the Bracket Battle is in the books, and already we have one major casualty. My wife, that ever loveable and sexy Dragon Queen, decided to pick Davidson for her Tournament Champion. In her defense, it's the alma mater for one of our best friends and their mascot is the Wildcat.

That British special agent from the IBDA (International Bureau of Draconic Affairs) is leading the pack, but it's a narrow lead with his pick for Wisconsin to win it all. Three of us (myself, Frank and Uncle Kerouac) are going with Kentucky. North Carolina also received three picks from our group (Hip, my dog Page and Sam the Bear). My kids are rolling the dice on our local team, the VCU Rams. That most resourceful of stuffed animals Ted E. Bear has picked Missouri. Just click on the pictures below to look at the complete brackets and see what you think of each player's picks.

Some of you might have already noticed the scoreboard for our Bracket Battle posted on the left side panel of the Lair. I'll post updated scores as frequently as possible throughout the tournament.

Bracket Battle 2012 is Upon Us!

What? Did you think I'd forgotten? No, "Wildcat's Lair" fans, the Bracket Battle has returned for 2012. We had to get one more in before the end of the world, after all.

This year's tournament will be a crowded one with ten brackets in play, including one put together by my son and daughter (assuming they don't kill each other trying to make their picks). The battle won't interrupt the ongoing storyline of "Frank & Hip Get Steampunked," but that doesn't mean I won't be sneaking in a few episodes devoted to the Bracket Battle. That means it's going to be a busy month in "The Wildcat's Lair," so buckle up, get your brackets set and let the games begin!

Oh, and before I forget... Put something on that computer of yours. Here. Let it wear the wallpaper I've got below (in all the appropriate sizes) so your computer doesn't have to live in shame while you stare at its naked pixels.

Thursday Randomness: What's Old is New Again

For this Thursday's Randomness, I'm going back in time. WAAAAAAAAAAY back. This WebComic started in July of 2005 as nothing but a reading blog. This was going to be my way of keeping track of the books I read and what I thought about them. As you can see, things changed. This is what happens when you introduce a cat into an environment.

Frank made his first appearance in the Wildcat's Lair on October 26, 2005. I created a banner for my blog (pictured below). His original role was as nothing but a mascot, but cats are never satisfied playing second fiddle. After that, it didn't take Frank long to take over the entire blog.

The first "WebComic" I did with Frank was posted less than a month later on November 19th. The episode, while somewhat apocryphal, was called "The Wildcat's Cafe Mocha Adventure." The episode contained the usual pictures with word balloons, but I also padded it with several paragraphs to bridge the gaps in the story.

Frank's adventures didn't gain any true consistency until May of 2008. Up until that point, I'd created fifty episodes. Most of those fifty episodes can be found here, but not all. The reason? The Wildcat's Lair originated as an AIM blog. This Blogger site started as a mirror version of the original Lair in May of 2006. As some of you AIM blogger refugees know full well, the AIM blogs went kaput in late 2008. Thanks to the mirror site (now the official home of the Wildcat's Lair), most of Frank's adventures from the AIM blog days were still online over here--but not all of them.

No, when the original lair went dark in November 2008, the original eleven episodes of Frank's misadventures went away. I created a "Wildcat's Lair Archives" with the intent of posting all of its blog entries, but as my blog had turned into a WebComic, I didn't see the point and left it to collect virtual dust. I did eventually post that first episode "The Wildcat's Cafe Mocha Adventure," but never got around to the other ten episodes.

Until now.

Earlier this week, I was wondering how many episodes I've done with Frank. Counting them was not a simple task, and as I worked my way backwards in time, I finally came to those lost episodes from 2005 and 2006. I realized it was way past time to get them re-posted.

Those early episodes include the original Bracket Battle from March of 2006, which was only between me and Frank. It's worth noting that Frank won that year. There's also a Christmas episode where Frank's family (with the notable exception of his parents and sister) visit the Lair, and chaos ensues. It's certainly worth a visit to see how my comic strip has evolved from those original episodes and to see just how much hair I've really lost in the past six years.

Oh, and the total number of episodes? As of yesterday's third episode in the "Frank & Hip Get Steampunked" storyline, the total is 348.
